Autism Program

Special Education Students participating in the 10-month autism program, are from ages 5 1/2 to 12 years old and come from the surrounding school districts of Essex County. Autism, characterized by atypical receptive behaviors and deficits in social and communication skills, is the most common of the pervasive developmental disorders and affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans. Students in the program benefit from a one-to-one student-teacher ratio, and instruction by experts in autism and Applied Behavior Analysis. Related services such as speech, physical, and occupational therapy; adaptive physical education; sensory integration programs; and parent support groups are also offered.

Little Schoolhouse Center for Early Education

Mount Carmel Guild Little Schoolhouse is an early-care and education center for children who are 3 years old and reside in the city of Elizabeth. The program is open 6.5 hours a day to meet the educational needs of the children. An experienced staff strives to make each child’s first school experience a positive and enjoyable one in a safe, loving, and nurturing environment. Mount Carmel Guild Little Schoolhouse subcontracts with the Elizabeth Board of Education. Mount Carmel Guild Little Schoolhouse is fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s largest and most influential organization of early-childhood educators dedicated to improving the quality of programs for young children. MCG Cares Center for Early Education

The MCG Cares Center for Early Care and Education provides top-quality early-childhood care in a safe, secure, loving environment for children who are 3 and 4 years old. Open Monday through Friday, 6.5 hours a day, the program is designed to meet the educational needs of our children. Our experienced, trained staff recognizes individual learning styles and optimizes child development, learning, problem solving, and socialization skills through the Creative curriculum. The MCG Cares teaching staff is trained in First Aid and is CPR-certified. The program provides free, nutritious meals and snacks. MCG Cares works in collaboration with the Newark Board of Education and the Division of Family Development to offer care, free-of-charge for preschool-aged children residing in Newark.

Mount Carmel Guild Academy

Mount Carmel Guild Academy is a private, non-profit, nonsectarian, co-educational school offering a comprehensive program for learning and behaviorally disabled children in grades Pre-K through 12. The school’s 210-day program focuses on providing an educationally and clinically supportive environment for students between the ages of three and twenty-one. The school offers a 10-month Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program, an autism program for students ages 5 1/2 to 12 years old. Additionally, we provide an Emotional/Behavioral program and the transition program (high school students). An appropriately certified teacher leads each class with the assistance of an instructional aide. Daily lesson plans reflect each student’s IEP, which is collaboratively developed by the parent, child study team case manager and Mount Carmel Guild Academy personnel. In addition, students are able to continue their academic and behavioral program in the summer by attending the Mount Carmel Guild Academy Extended School Year program.
